Flute body is made of Padauk Wood, it is an exotic African wood that has a natural rich red to orange color. I have found padauk to be an amazing tonal wood as it’s not too dense nor too soft, so it handles flutes in high keys or low keys very well. The mouth piece and foot end accents are made of Hard Maple wood and Totem of Curly Maple. The inlayed snake is made of Curly Maple wood.
The uniquely designed cherry base has been harvested on the property where I live and dried for a few years. To create the holder for the flute I have chiseled out the channel tight enough to hold the flute, which you would slide in and out of it as if a sword from its sheath. Base is naturally covered in Bark Beetle designs and is finished with a blend of Paste Waxes outside and inside of the carved flute channel to stop friction and let the flute glide in and out easily yet stay firmly in the channel.
The base is designed to be hanged on a wall via a bent brass rod inlaid into the back of the slab – find a stud in the wall, put a screw into it and you’re ready to hang the base onto it just like you would a painting. Flute is tuned to the Key of Low C and has an absolutely clear, perfect sound, response and sensitivity to low and high air pressure.
It is truly a professional musical instrument as well as a piece of art. The well know Pentatonic 6 hole flute scale has been extended by an edition of a 7th hole on the back of the drone for your thumb. The Scale thus is as follows:
Flute tuned to 440Hz standardized concert tuning.
Fundamental Note (all holes closed) – C
1st from bottom of the flute open the rest closed – D
2nd hole open – E
3rd hole open – F#
3rd hole closed 4th hole open – G
4th hole closed 5th hole open – A
6th hole open – B
7th thumb hole open – C#
Largest hole diameter is 3/8th of an inch.
I want to point your attention to the fact, that this flute will never be reproduced and will always stay as a one of a kind Functional Sculpture piece.
